The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-31 (NATO reporting name: Foxhound) is a supersonic interceptor designed to replace the MiG-25 Foxbat. Its development started in 1968, but it became clear that it would be a completely new aircraft sharing only the mission to become a supersonic interceptor.
The MiG-31B modernization took the existing airframe and improved upon the electronics and added a refueling probe.
